New Beginnings – Attitude of Expectation and Positive Speech!

It is January, the start of the new year when everyone speaks about new resolutions and changes they want to make. On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day there is an air of celebration and expectation for a better year. A time when we can turn over a new leaf and consider ourselves to have second chances to “get it right!”

I have a tradition at my home on New Year’s Day to write out a list of things we would like to happen this year and put them in the Hope jar. We then pray and have an attitude of expectation that these things will come to pass, if not this year, eventually. As I updated our hope jar this year and thought about the ramifications, I came to the conclusion that it is very much about the attitude of expectation and believing in the power of our words – self-fulfilling prophecies (Prov 18:21, Prov 15:4, Matt 12:25-37). At the beginning of the New Year everyone speaks with hope – but as New Year’s Resolutions go by the wayside, so too does our reminder of how our speech affects our lives!~

As we begin to watch the depressing news (note how the world is always going to end and everything is awful when you watch the news media), our faith and hope meter starts to lower. We begin speaking negatively and then it affects how we feel and as I believe, what happens to us. Our words are powerful and if we want to see great things happen this year, we need to begin speaking with great expectation. Speak God’s promises from the Bible – they will come to pass (Isaiah 55:11). Speaking the bible over our lives is very powerful (Heb 4:12, Prov 18:21) and will bless us and those around us.

So this year as you make new resolutions and expectations, remember to watch your speech – speak positive! Go on a negativity fast (see Igniting Faith in 40 Days by Steve & Wendy Backlund). What a great way to find happiness as you begin to speak truth and rejoice in great expectations for this year!

“The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”– Matt 12:35-37
